Business careers take a socially aware route
Updated: Thursday, July 16th, 2009
Some recent MBA graduates aspire towards being chief executive officer of their dream company yet others hope to take their business careers in an entirely different direction by giving back to less fortunate communities.
For example, two recent graduates from one of the top business schools, the Stanford Graduate School of Business, received Social Innovation Fellowships.
These grants will allow the students to establish their businesses that aim to alleviate or try to fix social or environmental problems.
One fellowship recipient, Lozano Fernandez, aims to set up Puentes Global which is an international employment agency that will help underprivileged Mexican workers with needy employers in Spain.
This improves the employment rates in poorer communities but also provides businesses with necessary labor.
Soon-to-be Dean Garth Saloner explained that the fellowship program "builds upon 38 years' experience preparing students for careers in nonprofits, government and socially responsible business" and is a solid goal for those interested in this application of an advanced business degree.
For those interested in following one of many business careers, the new fellowship initiative is inspiring to anyone hoping to become a business professional in the nonprofit sector.
