Study: Middle-skill jobs to grow in California

Updated: Monday, October 19th, 2009

Economic recovery in California is expected to create nearly 3 million new jobs that may require some higher education, such as training from an associates diploma or certificate program.

A new study from The Workforce Alliance (TWA), Skills2Compete and The California EDGE Campaign suggested 2.7 million middle-skill jobs will become available in the state over the next seven years.

Middle-skill occupations require more training than a high school diploma, but do not necessarily require graduation from a bachelors program, as the jobs demand specific training in a trade or technical field.

The environment, energy, construction, manufacturing and transportation industries will offer the majority of middle-skill job openings, according the study.

Researchers also noted that 35 percent of occupations in the state require a bachelors degree.

Kellie Johnson, CEO of ACE Clearwater Enterprises in Los Angeles, said there will be a greater demand for "a strong, ready and skilled workforce" as soon as "the economy bounces back."

Associates, diploma and certificate programs allow workers nationwide gain marketable skills to help them compete for new jobs that will come with economic recovery.

The Bureau of Labor Statistics reports that those who have some professional training past high school but no more than an associates degree could earn up to $107,780 annually, depending on occupation, education and years of experience.
