Student pays for MBA program with entrepreneurial initiative
Updated: Monday, October 26th, 2009
A graduate student at the Kingston University in London has used the skills he has learned in his business classes to begin a business career that has already paid for his tuition.
Spyros Pyrgiotis, a 24 year-old MBA degree candidate whose background is in sound engineering, invented a text-only website for advertisers.
The Text Page allows marketers to purchase text that links to their sites for three years at the rate of $2 per character. The site, which does not include any pictures or frames, features multi-colored text that reloads every time it is refreshed to ensure all content gets equal exposure.
Text on the site creates keywords, which can be picked up by search engines and help companies with their search engine optimization efforts.
Pyrgiotis designed the site with regard to how "our minds are adapting to
new media," he said.
With minimal marketing through word-of-mouth and Facebook, the site has already sold more than 12,000 characters, allowing Pyrgiotis to pay for graduate school while he nurtures a profitable business.
Accredited associate, bachelor and master business degree programs equip budding entrepreneurs with the skills they will need to start and run successful businesses. PayScale.com, a research company, says that average salaries for holders of MBA degrees ranged from $73,510 to $171,583 in 2008, depending on the field, position and years of experience.
