Evelyn Y. Davis, an activist for corporate governance, has donated $100,000 from the Evelyn Y. Davis Foundation to benefit students who wish to explore domestic or international business.

The foundation - which was set up in 1989 to support major universities, arts organizations and hospitals - made the donation to support activities and programs at the university that foster interest in business-related professions.

Davis' interest and experience in business have led her to hold a stake in approximately 80 corporations in varied industries and to lecture at several colleges and universities about shareholder issues. She also publishes Highlights and Lowlights, a corporate newsletter covering corporate governance.

Ruth J. Simmons, president of Brown University, said the gift will benefit the "Brown community by providing…additional support for students interested in business careers."

A MBA program may be a good option for students enrolled in associates or bachelors programs who are planning to launch business careers. PayScale.com, a research company, says that average salaries for holders of MBA degrees ranged from $73,510 to $171,583 in 2008, depending on the field, position and years of experience.
